We cross high passes, gazing in awe at the breathtaking views of Mt. Hurmukh (5380m) in the Pir Panjal range and Mt. Nangapabath, known as ‘naked mountain’ (8126m) in the Karakoram range. The total distance of 60 km approximately is covered in 9 to 10 days better acclilimizations and at leisure The trip also provides an opportunity to observe the Nomadic Gujars and Bakarwals who travel vast distances to enable their cattle to graze on the rich summer grass. This trip also provides the opportunity to visit several monesteries and palaces in Leh and a Tibetan refugee camp.

Itinerary

Day 1 Arrive Srinagar (1585m)

You will be met on your arrival by our representative and transferred to the houseboat, where your trek leader will give you the pre departure briefing. There is a short afternoon Shikara ride of Dal Lake. Overnight at houseboat.

Day 2 Half day sightseeing (1585m)

Morning sightseeing of Mughal gardens and Shankaracharaya temple. Afternoon at leisure and overnight in Srinagar.

Day 3 Drive to Aru via Pahalgam (2420m). 4 hours

An early morning start is imperative as it is a long drive of 105km to Aru, a beautiful lush green pasture with the grand view of the Katrinag Mountains as a backdrop. Afternoon at leisure or a few short walks to stretch the legs for the days ahead. Overnight in tents on two person share basis.

Day 4 To Lidderwat (3050m). 3- 4 Hours. 11 km

The trail begins with a steep climb to a ride line and then undulates along the true left of the Lidder River, crossing the odd side stream. As we near camp the valley narrows; a foot bridge leading us to our campsite.

Day 5 To Satlanjan (3420m). 2-3 hours

A short and easy day today to help with acclimatization, we trek along the true right of the gushing waters of the Lidder River on an undulating, occasionally steep, trail. We cross five tributaries of a side river beside the Gujar encampment and continue with a gentle descent towards a lush green meadow beside the Lidder River for our overnight camp. There is an optional acclimatization side walk to a ride in the afternoon.

Day 6 To Kolahoi base camp (4140m) and return to Lidderwat (3050m). 8 – 9 hours

An early morning start is imperative as we have a long day ahead of us. Our hike begins upwards and onwards as we head towards Kolahoi Base Camp, passing nomadic shepherds en-route. As we get closer to the glacier the walk becomes a little harder as the terrain becomes rough glacial moraine, but the increasingly spectacular views of the Kolahoi Peak urge us on.In order to gain the best view of Kolahoi we may have to climb a little higher on the ridge opposite. The return walk is easier and quicker as we head back to Lidderwat via Satlanjan, elated from being so close to the majestic peak.

Day 7 To Sikewas (3450m). 3- 4 hours.

We start our day with a short, yet steep, ascent as we follow the Tarsar river, crossing and re-crossing it before making a final ascent to our camp at Sikewas Meadow.

Day 8 To Tarsar lake (3899m) Day excursion. 4 - 5 hours

From the camp the trail crosses a small stream and heads up steeply along the Tarsar River through a rocky uutcrop and lush meadows to the beautiful turquoise lake of Tarsar. The lake is full of Rainbow and Brown trout and offers breathtaking views of Kolahoi and its adjacent peaks.We head back to our camp for lunch. The afternoon is at leisure for relaxation or interaction with nomadic Gujar.

DAY 09: To Sonmus (3350m) 4 – 5 hours

An early start this morning as we ascend to the Sikewas Pass (4100m). The pass offers wonderful views of the Sindh Valley. We then join a steep downhill trail for 2 hours to a Gujar settlement at Sonmus, where we overnight.

DAY 10: To Kargil (2650m) 6-8 hours
After Breakfast we descend through dense forest, past Gujar Villages and terraced rice fields to the road head at Sumbal (2130m). We drive to Kargil to overnight in a hotel. Kargil used to be the transit road for caravans on their way to and from China, Tibet, Yarken and Kashmir until 1949. With the marking of the international border between India and China it has turned into a stopover fortravellers to Srinagar and Zaskar.

Day 11 : To Leh(3524m)
Today we drive to Leh (about 129 km), crossing over Namika-La (3718m) and Fotu-La (4094m). En-route we visit the imposing statue of Lord Buddha at Mulbek andthe Lamayuru Monastery, known to be the oldest monastic establishment in Lakakh.We overnight in Hotel Singge Palace.

Day 12 : In Leh
We spend the morning visiting the Stok Palace Museum and a Tibetan refugee camp. We return to the hotel for lunch and spend the afternoon exploring the beautiful ruins ofLeh Palace (built in the same style and at the same time as the Potala Palace), Shankar Gompa and Shanti Stupa, taking in the main bazaaron our way back to the hotel. Overnight in Hotel.

Day 13 : In Leh.
We explore the Indus Valley, Shey Palace and Thikse and Hemis Monastery. In Ladakhi, ‘shey’ means reflection. The Shey Palace got its name from the beautiful reflection visible in the calm lake below. After our tranquil time spent at the palace and the monasteries we head back to Leh to overnight in our hotel.

Day 14:To Delhi.
Morning transfer to domestic airport for flight to Delhi. Arrive in Delhi and transfer to the Hotel in the city center. Afternoon, old Delhi sightseeing. Late evening, transfer to international airport.
